Lexington, SC 07/09/2024 — Conservative Republican and decorated military veteran Brian Duncan today called for the immediate resignation of suspended State Representative RJ May, following his federal indictment and detention on multiple charges related to child sexual abuse material.
“It is clear that RJ May can no longer effectively serve the people of District 88 while being incarcerated after a federal judge agreed with criminal prosecutors that Mr. May be held without bond because he is a threat to our community,” Duncan said. “RJ May is no longer in a position to represent this district — and he should resign.” The Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives, Rep. Murrell Smith, has already taken the first step by suspending Mr. May upon his indictment.
Duncan launched a write-in campaign last year following the August 5, 2024, Homeland Security raid on May’s home, which led to the seizure of dozens of electronic devices. Since then, May has not made any public statements regarding the investigation and has remained absent from his responsibilities to serve the citizens of the district.
“For nearly a year, House District 88 has had no voice at the Statehouse. We’ve had no explanation, no accountability, and no leadership,” Duncan said. “Our community deserves better than silence and uncertainty. We deserve a representative who is present, engaged, and focused on the needs of the people. Our communities within District 88 have profound challenges with growth, traffic congestion, providing good paying jobs while providing a quality of life with safe neighborhoods.”
Duncan, a lifelong Lexington County resident and proud conservative, said he stands ready to step in and serve when the time comes. “If and when a special election is called, I will be ready to lead from day one,” he said. “As a veteran and public servant, I’ve always answered the call when my community needed me — and that hasn’t changed. I’m familiar with the issues and challenges of our communities. I look forward to sharing my ideas and vision with the voters of District 88.” Until then, Duncan said the most important thing is ensuring the district has a path forward. “This is a difficult time for our community. But the way forward starts with a clean break. For the good of District 88 and the integrity of the General Assembly, I urge RJ May to resign his seat.”
