Brookland-Cayce High School’s athletic director announced a number of new athletic coaching hires for boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, and football

West Columbia, SC 05/20/2025 - Brookland-Cayce High School’s athletic director announced a number of new athletic coaching hires for boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, and football for the 2025-2026 seasons.

At a Monday press conference in the school’s arena, Athletic Director Louis Clyburn shared news about the coaches and told a bit about each one.

“Success is the Standard is our 2025 motto for Brookland-Cayce High School,” Clyburn told students, faculty, staff, and others assembled for the event. “In hiring our new coaches, we have used this as our measuring stick. Success for us is measured in academics, citizenship, sportsmanship, skill development, and health, wellness, and nutrition. If we create an environment where our student-athletes understand this and our coaches live by these standards, then wins on game day become easy, and we send out prepared young people into the real world to make a difference in the future, regardless of what path they take as Brookland-Cayce graduates.”

Clyburn introduced the following coaches:

Larry Davis, boys basketball coach: Davis, a former Gamecock basketball player and University of South Carolina Hall of Fame member, has coached at the collegiate and high school levels. His high school experience includes Lewisville (2011-13), where he won a state championship and was named SC Coach of the Year, as well as Northwestern (2013-15) and York Preparatory Academy (2018-22), where he also served for two years as athletic director. He comes to Brookland-Cayce after serving as the men’s basketball coach at Mars Hill College, and prior to that worked as operations director at James Madison University and as an assistant coach at Newberry College. Davis was a standout high school and collegiate player himself, named South Carolina’s “Mr. Basketball” and State Player of the Year in 1991.  He won Denmark-Olar High School’s state and national scoring titles during the 1990-91 season and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee. He was among the state’s first men’s basketball signees of University of North Carolina Coach Dean Smith and was a member of the 1993 UNC national championship team. He later transferred to the University of South Carolina and was the leading scorer during the 1995-96 season.  In 1997, the Gamecocks won the SEC Championship and were ranked No. 4 in the country.  At the end of the season, Davis was named an AP First Team All-SEC selection and AP Second-Team All-American.  He graduated from the University of South Carolina.

Terrence Gibson, girls basketball coach: Gibson served for nearly 20 years as the girls coach at Ridge View High School, where his team won the 2024 Class 4A Lower State championship game. At Ridge View, he also coached the girls tennis team starting in 2015, winning a Region Championship that year and heading to the playoffs each year after. He also coached Ridge View boys tennis, which made the playoffs every year after he began coaching in 2019. His coaching achievements include 259 wins, two-time Region Coach of the Year, 45 players receiving college basketball scholarships, 18 All-Star selections, and 10 North Carolina vs. South Carolina All-Star selections. His own playing career included varsity basketball at Keenan High School, and men’s basketball at Imperial Valley College and Virginia Commonwealth University, where he received a bachelor’s degree. He also played professional basketball for five years.

“Our two basketball coaches are each individually enormous success stories,” Clyburn said Monday. “Both of these men started their journey as did I, in and around the Midlands.”

Cory Karl, cheerleading coach: Karl has headed Brookland-Cayce’s competitive cheer program for the past year but will now oversee all the school’s cheer programs. She came to Brookland-Cayce after coaching at Ben Lippen School, where the cheer team won back-to-back state championships. She founded the competitive cheerleading program at Meadow Glen Middle School and achieved competitive success through predominantly first, second, and third place finishes at Meadow Glen Middle and Ben Lippen. She also coached tumbling/stunting and team coaching at local gyms for 12 years. Karl was a cheerleader at the University of South Carolina (2010-2014), with two top four placements at college nationals and was a two-time All-American selection. She was a competitive cheerleader at Lexington High School and a state runner-up (2007).

At Monday’s press conference, Clyburn, who in addition to serving as athletic director is Brookland-Cayce’s head football coach, announced his football coaching staff:

G.A. Mangus Jr., Offensive Coordinator: Mangus brings 14 years of Division I-A coaching experience, with four as a head coach and a total of 15 overall as an offensive coordinator. His stops as an offensive coordinator include the University of South Carolina, where he coached quarterbacks Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson, as well as Kutztown University, SC State University, Middle Tennessee State University, Delaware Valley College, Ursinus College, Widener University, and the XFL’s New York Guardians. At the high school level, his offensive coordinator coaching work includes Heathwood Hall and Hammond School, with Hammond winning a state championship (2023). He has experience coaching all offensive positions and linebackers and was named a Top 25 Recruiter by Rivals, 24/7 Sports, and ESPN. He has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florida.

Scotty Dean, Defensive Coordinator: Dean, a Georgia native, was a scholarship football player at Wofford College, where he was a teammate with Brookland-Cayce High School Principal Dr. Vance Jones. His high school coaching experience includes as a defensive assistant at Camden High School, defensive coordinator at Fairfield Central, and most recently as head coach at C.A. Johnson High School.

Zeke Walker, Defensive Assistant/Linebackers: The Cayce native played football as a student at Brookland-Cayce High School and received a football scholarship to Indiana University. He previously served as a linebacker coach at Camden High School and is a member of the Brookland-Cayce Athletic Hall of Fame.

Paul Nesbitt, Defensive Assistant/Defensive Line: Nesbitt has spent more than a decade coaching football, including at Lower Richland High School and Heathwood Hall, as well as three years at Brookland-Cayce High School. He has been part of three Region Championship teams. He played football as a student at Cross High School and went on to play defensive lineman at SC State University, where he was part of two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships.

Braden Keith Walker, Offensive Line Coach/Strength Coach: Walker, a West Columbia native, was a student-athlete at Airport High School. A graduate of SC State University, he previously served as offensive coordinator and strength coach at Westwood High School and Lower Richland High School. He was an intern with the University of South Carolina Strength Program under Coach Will Muschamp.

Tyler Renew, Offensive Assistant/Running Backs and Skill: Renew’s coaching experience includes two years at Ben Lippen School, including three state championships, three years at Hammond School, and six years in athlete performance training. He attended Ben Lippen and was a four-letter athlete in track and field, basketball, soccer, and football. He attended The Citadel, where he participated in track and field for two years and played football for four years and was part of two conference championships. He entered the NFL draft and was brought on as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons.

Cliff McDonald,  Offensive Assistant: McDonald has five years of coaching experience, including a year as an assistant at Ridge View High School and four years at C.A. Johnson High School, where the team hosted two consecutive playoff games for the first time in 40-plus years and four consecutive playoff experiences during his tenure. He played football at Fairfield Central High School and attended Southern New Hampshire University.

Jimmy Odell, Defensive Assistant: Odell was a Class of 2017 graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School and graduated from Lander University. He served as a defensive line coach for Aiken High School before coming home in 2021 as C-Team defensive coordinator for Brookland-Cayce before becoming inside linebackers coach in 2024.

Jordan Terry, Offensive Assistant/Skill Players: Terry attended West Charlotte High School, leading his team to two playoff appearances. He attended Limestone College, playing five years of collegiate football before transitioning into a graduate assistant football coach role. He served as head basketball coach at Busbee Creative Arts Academy and assistant track coach and a football coach at Brookland-Cayce.

Jarvis Riley, Defense and Offense/Line of Scrimmage Assistant: Riley is currently an assistant coach at  Brookland-Cayce and is a Cayce Police Officer and School Resource Officer.

Clyburn said he’s looking forward to the 2025-2026 sports seasons. 

“We are excited about the elite standard to which all of these coaches will add to and bring to the Brookland-Cayce family,” he added.
