Saint Andrews, SC (Paul Kirby) 12/07/2020 - A fire broke out in a small strip mall on Bush River Road Sunday afternoon damaging the businesses inside. The fire was dispatched about 1:45 PM in the 2300 block which is just west of the I-26 interchange. Firefighters from the Irmo Fire District, Lexington County’s Fire Service, the City of West Columbia, and the Columbia Fire Department all responded.
A witness on the scene told dispatchers he heard what he described as an explosion from within one of the businesses. Just a few moments later, he saw smoke was coming from the roof vents and dialed 911.
On arrival, firefighters found a fire in one of the middle businesses of the complex. They made an aggressive interior attack on the fire in the building’s common attic area. According to the Irmo Fire District's Operations Chief Sloane Calentino, one of the units were damaged by the flames. The other three occupancies suffered minor smoke and water damage. There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters
Calentino said that their preliminary Investigation found no evidence of an explosion; however, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
