Cayce, SC – 02/10/2021 (Paul Kirby) – Law enforcement officers with the Cayce Department of Public Safety say they have arrested a suspect in the auto theft and kidnapping of a 2-year-old child that occurred Tuesday night. According to their social media platforms, as of 4:03 pm, Shyheem Malik Phillips, the person of interest in the case, is in police custody.
Investigators have not released many details as they carefully work through this case. We do know that an African American man was outside of a motel in Cayce last night when he saw an opportunity to jump into a car and flee. Unfortunately, a small child and a dog were in the car that he stole.
This sparked a large manhunt that included an Amber Alert. Deputies from Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, West Columbia, Springdale, South Congaree, SLED, the SCHP, the FBI, and other jurisdictions quickly locked the south end of Lexington County down to prevent the suspect from escaping with the car and its occupants. The car with the child and the dog in it was recovered between Gaston and Swansea a short time later.
Cayce DPS officers are still asking for help. Anyone with information regarding Phillips or the alleged crimes, please contact the Cayce Department of Public Safety at 803-794-0456. Information can be reported anonymously by visiting http://www.midlandscrimestoppers.com/ or calling 1-888-CRIME-SC.
