UPDATED: Cayce officers make an arrest after catching suspects breaking into cars

Cayce, SC 11/28/2021 (Paul Kirby) – In the early morning hours of Saturday, November 27, 2021, a sharp-eyed Cayce Police Officer who was patrolling the city found several suspects who appeared to be in the process of breaking into vehicles parked at the Advenir Apartments. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle the suspects were in but instead of complying with the officer and pulling over, the thieves fled the scene initiating a pursuit. Cayce’s officers gave chase.

The Cayce officers followed the fleeing suspects along I-26 and into the Irmo / St. Andrews area where the driver of the vehicle lost control and struck a bush in the yard of a home. This brought the pursuit to a conclusion. At that point, three suspects fled the vehicle on foot. K-9 officers began to arrive on scene from Cayce and a dog was put on the track.

At this point, deputies from the Richland County Sheriff's Department and the Irmo Police Department assisted in setting up a perimeter. Richland County also responded a K-9 team that was used as backup for Cayce's team. Eventualy, a K-9 led the officers to one of the suspects and that person was taken into custody.

A spokeswoman for the Cayce Police Department said Sunday that the young man that was taken into custody is Zion D'Andre Ritter, 18. He has been charged with Failure to Obey Public Safety Ofiicer, Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol, Possession of Stolen Pistol, Autobreaking, and Possession of Burglary Tools. He is currently being held in the Lexington County Detention Center where he will face a judge in bond court sometime today.

As Cayce officers continued to patrol the city, one located a vehicle parked at the Marriot that had its window broken out. According to the city's spokeswoman, a number of items that appeared to be stolen from this vehicle were recovered from the vehicle the suspects were driving. Several other suspects got away immediately after the pursuit, but Cayce officers are continuing to work this case to locate the second suspect through investigative means.
