Chapin, SC 07/27/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A head-on collision on Chapin Road near Chapin Christian Gymnastics caused law enforcement officers to completely block the road for about an hour Monday afternoon. The collision occurred about 5:15 p.m. as the commute was beginning to hit its peak.
According to firefighters that responded, two people were trapped in the wreckage of the mangled vehicles. The fire crews began working with extrication tools to free the trapped people while EMS personnel were caring for the injured people. According to the first fire officer on scene, there was heavy front-end damage to both vehicles.
Police officers closed the road and began to detour traffic around the crash site. People were being told to turn around on both ends of the wreck’s scene as the road was impassable.
At one point, fire service officials reported that someone on scene was in cardiac arrest. Tuesday afternoon, the SCHP and the Lexington County Corner’s Office confirmed a fatality as a result of the collision.
According to Master Trooper David Jones of the SC Highway Patrol, a Honda Pilot was traveling toward Irmo on Chapin Road when it was approached by a Chevrolet pickup truck that was driving toward Chapin. As the vehicles got closer, the driver of the Chevy dropped the truck's tires off the right shoulder of the road, overcorrected to the left, and then struck the Honda Pilot head-on. The driver of the Honda, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died as a result of the collision. The driver of the Chevy was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to a local medical facility with serious injuries.
The SCHP is investigating this wreck. We will try and update this report as more information becomes available.
