Children injured in UTV crash near Pelion Sunday

Pelion, SC 09/26/2022 (Paul Kirby) – A number of children were injured, including at least one severely, in a UTV crash on Windy Wood Road near Florence Baptist Church Sunday afternoon. According to a local resident that drove up on the crash just after it happened, he found a group of pre-teen and early teen girls that were on the ground, screaming, and injured to varying degrees. One girl who appeared to be about 12 years old, had seriously injured her arm near the wrist and was bleeding profusely. The good Samaritan then ran to the church’s parsonage across the street where he was given towels before rushing back to initiate first aid. In the midst of the confusion, he had someone dial 911.

The witness said that it appeared to him as if he UTV had flipped, ejecting all its riders in the process. He elevated and applied direct pressure to the most seriously injured child’s arm and wrist which was obviously broken and bleeding profusely. In a short time, a truck from Lexington County’s Fire Service arrived followed by additional equipment and personnel from EMS.

The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash. They have not commented on the child’s condition.
