West Columbia, SC 12/02/2024 – The City of West Columbia has been awarded a $288,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT) Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. This grant will be used to develop and implement an action plan to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers along the Highway 1 Corridor in West Columbia.
"We are grateful for this funding from the USDOT," said Mayor Tem Miles. "The safety of our residents is our top priority, and this grant will allow us to take additional steps toward making our streets safer for everyone."
The SS4A program is a vital initiative that provides funding to communities across the country to address road safety issues. This grant will be used to:
Develop a comprehensive action plan identifying key safety challenges along the Highway 1 Corridor and outline a data-driven strategy to address them.
Implement projects such as installing crosswalks, improving sidewalks, traffic calming measures, and conducting educational campaigns.
Make the Highway 1 Corridor more accessible and user-friendly for all
