Swansea, SC 06/23/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A collision that involved a tractor trailer truck and at least one other vehicle caused emergency responders to close Whetstone Road near Lee Witt Road early Tuesday morning. The collision was called in around 6:20 a.m.
Personnel and equipment for Lexington County’s Fire Service and EMS responded. They had been advised prior to arrival that at least one person was trapped in the wreckage. When the first truck out of the Swansea Fire Station arrived, they reported that a tractor trailer truck was laying on its side and at least one sedan was involved. They immediately made the decision to close Whetstone Road.
Additional resources from the Mack Edisto Fire Station arrived and the firefighters began working to extricate the trapped patient. This only took a short time. The first due battalion chief requested a hazardous material response because the trucks fuel system was breached, and fluids were leaking on the road.
Law enforcement officers from Lexington County arrived to assist with traffic control on the blocked road. Troopers from the SC Highway Patrol also began to pull up to begin their investigation into the cause of the wreck.
Lexington County has not said how many patients were transported from the scene or what their condition was.
At 9:42 a.m., the SCDPS still showed Whetstone Road as blocked. A large wrecker from Carolina Fleet out of Gaston was on the scene attempting to right the truck so that it could be towed.
