Coroner Fisher identifies truck driver who perished in Sunday afternoon accident

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the driver of the tractor trailer truck who was killed in a collision on I-20 Sunday afternoon. Fisher and the South Carolina Highway Patrol have determined that the accident happened just after 5:30 p.m. near the 57 mile-marker or the Cedarcrest Drive overpass on September 20, 2020.

Fisher said Monday that Benjamin Edward Parker, 44, of Douglasville, Georgia was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision due to injuries he sustained in the crash. Investigators have said the tractor trailer truck driven by Parker left the right side of the roadway before colliding with a bridge abutment. Immediately after the truck hit the bridge it burst into flames shortly after he was ejected..

According to the coroner, Parker was the only occupant of the truck. He was wearing a seat belt when the collision occurred.

The bridge was damaged as a result of the subsequent fire. It is being evaluated by engineers from the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
