Lexington, SC 0417/2021 - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Friday that she and her staff are honored to announce that the first public memorial and burial service will take place next week at the County of Lexington Cemetery. This is located at 729 S. Lee Street in Batesburg, SC. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2021. Unfortunately, a public ceremony could not be held last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and related safety concerns.
The cemetery was created to accommodate the growing need for a final resting place for indigent and unidentified decedents in Lexington County. Coroner Fisher and her staff respectfully laid to rest forty-three individuals in 2020. Any known family members or friends were notified afterward and invited to pay their respects privately.
Twenty-five decedents will be honored and their cremated remains interred on Tuesday. Many of these individuals had no known relatives or friends. Coroner Fisher and her staff are hoping that some members of the public will join them at the cemetery and help in extending some compassion for these decedents as they are laid to rest.
