Lexington, SC 06/10/2023 (Paul Kirby) - Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has released the identities of the two people who died in two separate and unrelated collisions that happened in the Pelion area of Lexington County on Sunday evening. In both cases, Coroner Fisher said that a one person died each of these crashes.
According to Coroner Fisher, the first collision occurred in 2300 block of Pine Street (Hwy 302) in the Pelion area of Lexington County. That crash happened at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Father’s Day. Sunday, June 18, 2023. The coroner identified that decedent in thus crash as Katie Lee Kelly, 26, of Salley, S.C.
According to Fisher, Kelly was travelling eastbound toward the Town of Pelion on Pine Street when her vehicle left the roadway on the left side and overturned. Kelly, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries she sustained during the crash. An adult passenger in the vehicle was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries according to Fisher. A minor child, who was also a passenger in the vehicle, declined medical attention and was released at the scene. Both passengers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.
The second collision occurred in the 500 block of Old Charleston Road which is shown as being near Canal Drive and Old Charleston Road in the Pelion area of Lexington County. That collision happened at approximately 8:40 p.m. as well. According to Coroner Fisher, Walter Leighton King, 69, of Pelion was driving this vehicle his vehicle northbound on Old Charleston Road toward Calks Ferry Road when it went off the left side of the roadway, eventually struck a utility pole, and then overturned. King, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries he sustained.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office continuing to investigate both of these incidents.
