Coroner Fisher reveals the victim's name and details of the Samaria Hwy shooting

Lexington, SC 07/12/2023 (Paul Kirby) – Today, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher released the name and autopsy results of the man who died as a result of a gunshot wound that occurred during an incident that took place shortly after midnight on July 7, 2023. According to Fisher, this fatal shooting took place in the 1400 block of Samaria Hwy. southwest of the town of Batesburg in an unincorporated area of Lexington County.

Coroner Fisher said in her statement that William Mark Bedenbaugh, 56, of Batesburg was killed at the Samaria Hwy. location. He was shot by another man once in the upper left chest. Bedenbaugh died on scene.


A forensic autopsy was performed at MUSC in Charleston on July 11, 2023. Autopsy results confirmed the cause of death as a single gunshot wound to the chest. Now that those results have been received, this will be turned over to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department who will consult with the Eleventh Circuit Solicitors Office. They will decided what if any charges will be brought against the shooter.
