Coroner identifies NC man killed in DUI crash on the interstate early Saturday

Lexington, SC 02/21/2021 (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the man that was killed in a DUI related collision on I-26 near Chapin early Saturday morning. Fisher said that the collision, which occurred in the westbound lanes near the 91 mm close to Chapin, happened at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, 2021.



Fisher said that Michael Allen Costner, 48, of Morganton, NC was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision. The Dodge van he was driving had slowed for traffic and road construction when he was struck from behind by a man that was been charged with felony driving under the influence that killed Costner. Other occupants of the van that Costner was driving, as well as a passenger from the other vehicle, were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.


The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
