Cedar Creek, SC (06/01/2021 Paul Kirby) – Around noon on Tuesday, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the person who was killed in a single vehicle rollover in the 800 block of Rock N Creek Road on Memorial Day. This is near the Cedar Creek and Hollow Creek communities of Lexington County. Fisher said that the fatal collision happened at approximately 9:28 p.m. Monday night.
According to Coroner Fisher, William Rikard Swygert, 22, of Leesville was pronounced dead at an area hospital last night due to his injuries. Swygert lost control of the Toyota SUV he was driving which caused it to roll over. According to SC State Troopers, he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was ejected trough the sunroof of the vehicle.
Swygert was the second person who died in a single-vehicle collision in that same general area over the holiday weekend. Fisher said earlier that Nicholus Maurice Brown, 44, was killed when he was thrown from his vehicle in a collision and died a few minutes after midnight on Saturday morning. That rollover occurred on Brodie Road. He was also not wearing a seatbelt when that collision occurred.
Memorial Day weekend is the official start of what the SCDPS refers to as the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer. Each year from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, the number of traffic fatalities on our state’s roads increase. SC State Troopers join with other law enforcement officers statewide to aggressively enforce traffic safety laws and focus on the use of seatbelts, identifying distracted drivers, speeders, and motorist driving under the influence, all of which contribute to the loss of life over the summer.
