Determination of investigators leads West Columbia PD to make an arrest in 2022 homicide

West Columbia, S.C. 03/13/2023 (Paul Kirby) – The dogged determination of investigators with the West Columbia Police Department has led to the arrest of a suspect in July, 2022, homicide. According to the police, they were able to arrest their suspect on Sunday, March 12, 2023, in the homicide of another man that occurred on July 3, 2022.

According to Capt. Matthew Deas, a spokesperson for the West Columbia Police Department, officers arrested 40-year-old Charles Edward Way of Lexington. They believe that last summer, Way killed Michael Crolley, also of Lexington, in the 2600 block of Augusta Road in West Columbia. Crolley’s body was found deceased in the wood line near that address. His death was ruled a homicide, and investigators immediately went to work on the case. It took them nearly eight months, but through their persistence and hard work, they were able to build a solid case that identified, located, and arrest their suspect Way.

Way was transported to the Lexington County Detention Center following his arrest.
