Leesville, SC (07/08/2021 Paul Kirby) – Units from Lexington County’s Fire Service, EMS, the Sheriff’s Department, and the SC Highway Patrol responded to a report of a vehicle that had left the road and was partially submerged in a body of water Monday night. The call for assistance came in from the area of Two Notch Road and Davis Hite Place at approximately 8:30 p.m. on June 7, 2021.
Specially trained first responders from across central and western Lexington County rushed to the scene of the collision. This response included the closest fire engine, a battalion level supervisor, and a special team with water rescue training and equipment from Lexington County’s Corley Mill Fire Station.
When the first truck out of Gilbert arrived, that apparatus's officer reported that the crashed vehicle was approximately 50 percent submerged. A bystander told the emergency crews that the driver of the vehicle had gotten out after the crash and fled the scene on foot. Firefighters checked the waterlogged vehicle to ensure that no other occupants were still inside. Once they were sure the vehicle was clear of people, they left the scene in the hands of law enforcement.
The SC Highway Patrol is investigating this incident.
