St. Andrews, SC 09/12/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A fire ripped through an apartment complex in the St. Andrews area of Lexington County Saturday sending columns of thick smoke into the air as firefighters from across the region worked to battle the blaze. The fire was at the Peachtree Place Apartments and it burned for some time Saturday afternoon leaving several firefighters with minor injuries before it was brought under control. It was reported around noon and marked under control about four hours later.
Crews from the Irmo Fire District, Lexington County, the City of West Columbia, and the City of Columbia Fire Departments worked together to fight the fire. The firefighters that were injured did not require hospitalization. When the fire was put out, more than 17 families had been displaced or needed assistance from the American Red Cross.
Motorist from both I-20 and I-26 could see the large plumes of smoke in the sky as the fire was consuming the structure. One said that the smoke was very dark at one point but as the firefighters worked, you could see the smoke change to a lighter color. That driver said he didn’t know what was burning at first but knew it was big because he could eventually see fire rolling from the building above the tree line.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
