Firefighters battle house fire near Batesburg-Leesville Wednesday afternoon

Batesburg-Leesville, SC (Paul Kirby) - A fire in the 1100 block of Willis St near Batesburg-Leesville damaged a single-family home Wednesday afternoon. The fire was reported just before 5:30 p.m.

Firefighters from the Batesburg- Leesville Fire Department responded and were assisted by others from the Lexington County Fire Service. When the first fire trucks arrived on the scene, personnel onboard reported there was smoke coming from the area of the home’s roof.

Because the burning home was a distance from the town, there were no fire hydrants available. Incoming personnel were advised that a water shuttle operation would be necessary, and Batesburg-Leesville’s first due firefighters immediately requested additional tanker trucks from both the town and the county to aid in supplying water to fight the fire. On-call volunteer firefighters were able to pick up Batesburg-Leesville's tanker truck and respond with it.

As Lexington County personnel began arriving so did there on-duty supervisors. They began to assist directing the firefighters who were fighting the fire that appeared to be in an attic area. Eventually, when enough personnel arrived on scene, a crew was able to ventilate the attic space exposing the fire. At that point, the interior crews were able to put the fire out.

Officials with the Batesburg-Leesville Fire Department have not said what caused the fire. They also have not released any estimated damages because of the blaze.
