Firefighters from Lexington County battle mobile home fire near Pelion Tuesday afternoon

Pelion, SC 05/11/2022 (Paul Kirby) – Firefighters from a number of Lexington County fire stations battled a mobile home fire off Northcutt Road near Pelion Tuesday afternoon. The first calls reporting the fire began coming into the County’s 911 Communication Center shortly before 5:20 p.m. Northcutt Road runs between Edmund Highway and Bushberry Road east of the Pelion town limits.

Firefighters had to deal with a long, narrow, unimproved drive to access the burning home. (See Article on Driveway Access for First Responders) Once the first due crew did get personnel on the fire, the reported smoke showing and flames pushing out of one end of the home. A fire hydrant was close enough so that another truck could lay a 5” water supply hose from that. This effectively blocked a portion of Northcutt Road and law enforcement was requested to redirect traffic. Before officers could arrive, several people drove over the firehose which is illegal in the state of South Carolina. People who do this could face criminal and civil penalties for their actions.

Once firefighters made their attack, it did not take them long to bring the fire under control. Crews did what salvage work they could and made sure the fire was completely out prior to picking up their equipment and leaving the scene.

The county firefighters were assisted by personnel from Lexington County's EMS and the Lexington County Sheriff's Department. Lexington County has not released an estimate of the damages to the home or if anyone was displaced by the fire.

Map indicates location of Northcutt Road not the actual scene or home.
