Firefighters quickly extinguish fire on Shull Island

Lake Murray, SC 04/23/2021 (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire of Shull Avenue Thursday evening right at sundown. Shull Avenue is on Shull Island, a long peninsula that juts out into Lake Murray at the end of Shore Road.

A citizen who was in his pontoon boat nearby said that he saw the fire and stopped to see if he could help. The fire was consuming an outbuilding at the home and quickly intensified as a strong breeze off the lake fanned the flames. He was worried that the fire might spread across the yard and ignite another structure.

When Lexington County firefighters arrived, they quickly pulled a hose from their apparatus and put the fire out. Although the outbuilding and the things around it were destroyed, nothing else was seriously damaged.
