First class of AVID students from Airport High are college bound

West Columbia, SC (06/03/2021) - Fourteen Airport High School students were recognized recently as members of the first graduating class of AVID Elective students.

The students, who were identified as college-bound individuals in either middle school or high school, completed the AVID college readiness curriculum during their time at Airport High School, while maintaining a cumulative class grade point average of 3.998. Nine of the graduates in the AVID program will graduate with Honors, High Honors or Honors with Distinction designations as a result of their academic excellence.

All students also have been accepted into a 2- or 4-year college and as a class, they have received, to date, more than $480,000 in scholarships from 30-plus public or private colleges and universities. This amount will continue to rise as the end of the school year nears.

AVID Elective graduates include Isha Bojang (College of Charleston), Charles Chandler (Midlands Tech; graduated early), Darion Grant (Coastal Carolina University), Sanaa Greene (Clemson University), Micah Hill (Columbia College), Caleb Huggins (Belmont Abbey University), Joshua Koon (Midlands Tech), Crystal Mason-Demby (USC-Columbia), Mac McIver (Midlands Tech), Jahsiah Richardson (USC-Aiken), Dallis Roof (Midlands Tech), Joshua Spry (Midlands Tech), Angela Way (USC-Columbia), and Reese Yarborough (Midlands Tech, USC-Columbia).

“These students have continued to strive in their pursuit of college, they have worked extremely hard during the pandemic, and through the rigor of their classes, dual enrollment and Advanced Placement classes as well. I am excited to see where their college journey takes them,” said Daniel Bailey, AVID elective teacher and site coordinator.

In addition to their AVID work in the classroom, members of this year’s graduating AVID class also achieved outside the classroom. Among their achievements, participants:

  • Established and created the reading buddies program with Wood Elementary as a ninth grade service learning project.

  • Helped raise over $174,000 for Camp Kemo over the period of 4 years.

  • Managed and planned 4 successful Trick or Treat Lane events, which welcomed more than 8,000 people to the school campus for a safe place for Halloween activities.

In addition:

  • Two AVID students completed the Lexington Medical Center Partners Program.

  • Several students lettered in varsity sports, and two were named Rotary Students of the Month.

  • Four students will be CATE completers through the Lexington Two Innovation Center.

These students are the epitome of hard work and determination,” said AVID counselor Rebekah Durham. “Their drive and goal of going to college has been a priority for them, and the AVID framework has supported them well.”
