Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – Construction on a roundabout at the intersection of Fish Hatchery and Busbee Roads will soon begin. This intersection has been the site of many serious collisions over the years and those who do not know the roads in that area of the county well can easily be confused as to which way Fish Hatchery Road travels, especially when driving from west to east.
According to the SCDOT people can begin to expect some delays around October 19 as the right-of-way clearing begins. The heavy construction should begin in February of 2021 and if all goes well, the project should be completed around the end of August.
According to the SCDOT, on approximately October 19th of this year the intersection will be changed to a three way stop. They don’t believe detouring the traffic will be necessary unless some unexpected issues arise during the construction project.
According to studies by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), roundabouts are much safer than traditional stop sign or signal-controlled intersections. Roundabouts can reduce crashes that result in injuries by as much as 75% at intersections that originally had stop signs or signals for the control of traffic.
