Gunshot at Midlands Tech's Airport Campus was accidental discharge

West Columbia, SC 11/22/2022 (Paul Kirby) - On Monday evening, a MTC Campus Police Department officer accidentally discharged his backup service weapon while in his office at Midlands Tech's Airport Campus. This occured on Monday, November 21, 2022, shortly after 6:00 p.m.

According to Kevin Floyd, MTC public information officer, an on-campus first responder bandaged the officer's hand as first aid. A Lexington County EMS unit the transported him to Lexington Medical Center for treatment.

The incident is being handled by the MTC Campus Police Chief Tim Martin. Chief Martin notes that it happened in the officer’s office inside the department's administrative area and that the veteran law enforcement officer has active certification for the backup weapon that jammed and fired when the officer tried to clear the jam.
