Home destroyed by fire near Irmo early Wednesday morning

Irmo, SC Paul Kirby 11/25/2020 - A home was destroyed by fire shortly before 4:00 a.m. on Berl Mar Road near Irmo early Wednesday morning. Dispatchers gave the closest cross street as Archer Court. Berl Mar Road runs off Weed Drive between North Lake Drive and Lake Murray Boulevard close to the Irmo town limits.

When callers reported the fire, equipment and personnel from the Irmo Fire District, the Lexington County Fire Service, and the City of Columbia Fire Department responded. A crew from Lexington County EMS was also dispatched to the fire for medical standby.

The first arriving personnel from the Irmo Fire District reported that flames were coming out of all sides of a mobile home. Firefighters quickly began to stretch their hoses and pour water onto the flames. With the cooperation of all the departments on scene, the fire was quickly brought under control.

As firefighters and equipment from the Irmo Fire District continued to work at the burning home, additional emergency resources were moved from Lexington County across the Lake Murray dam to cover Irmo’s North Lake Fire Station. This is done in the event another emergency is reported. This type of cooperation is crucial to protecting all the citizens of Lexington County with well-trained firefighters and the proper emergency equipment in the event another emergency occurs. It usually happens without the community even realizing it’s going on.

The home was destroyed by the fire. The cause of the blaze has not been determined at this point. The last of the firefighters were leaving the scene just before 6:00 a.m. Wednesday.
