South Congaree, SC 10/16/2022 (Paul Kirby) – The home of well-known South Congaree businesswoman Naomi Halter caught fire and burned early Sunday morning. The first calls regarding the fire came in a short while before 7:00 a.m. The home is on Dunbar Road just off Church Street within a mile of Lexington County’s South Congaree Fire Station.
When the first fire crews arrived the reported they had a working house fire. Crews suited up to search the home, but according to reports from neighbors, Mrs. Halter had gotten out prior to the arrival of the firefighters. Another team pulled several attack hoses and began fighting the fire. It took some time for the teams to bring the fire under control. Afterward, firefighters spent more time overhaul the home to ensure there were no remaining embers smoldering that could cause the fire to rekindle.
One of the fire commanders later made the decision to call for law enforcement to begin an investigation into the fire that has been deemed suspicious in nature. That investigation could take some time to complete. The home was made uninhabitable by the fire.
