Lexington, SC 06/14/2023 (Paul Kirby) – A home was heavily damaged by fire in the 200 block of Bronze Court near its intersection with Pewter Drive north of the Town of Lexington Monday afternoon. The fire was reported at approximately 2:15 p.m. and firefighters from across that region of Lexington County as well as the Irmo Fire District fought it.
When the first fire service resources arrived, they reported that heavy smoke was coming from the attic area of the home around all its sides. One team quickly organized to search the house in case someone or family pets were trapped inside. Another crew pulled firehoses and made an aggressive attack on the interior of the house while a third due truck established a water supply from a nearby fire hydrant. The first aerial truck to arrive put their ladder to the roof to open it up for ventilation.
A special truck from a station near the Saluda County Line was called to the scene to provide the firefighters battling the blaze with rehab services. Those teams provide cooling fans, water sprays, rehydration, and help a standby Lexington EMS crew to monitor the vital signs of the firefighters who exert themselves during the fight while the ambient temperatures outside are high. Each firefighter must return to a certain threshold prior to being permitted to return to the hose lines again.
It took more than an hour for the teams to get the fire to the “under control” phase. The fire service still had teams on the scene for several more hours as they mopped up the remnants of the fire, cleaned their equipment, and reloaded their apparatus to return every truck and its personnel to service.
Several Lexington County Fire Marshals responded to the fire toward the end of the operation to help determine the cause of the fire. The fire service has not released that cause or said if the American Red Cross was assisting the family who was displaced by the fire.
