Irmo Fire District relies on automatic aid to extinguish fire and evacuate assisted living center early Monday

Irmo, SC 08/20/2024 (Paul Kirby) – Early Monday morning, crews from the Irmo Fire District, the Lexington County Fire Service, and the City of Columbia Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire in an assisted living facility located in the 900 block of Columbia Avenue. As the first firefighters arrived, they began attacking the fire. Other firefighters joined with crews from Lexington County EMS, started evacuating the residence.

Fire damage was limited to a laundry room and did not extend into the rest of the structure. There were two minor injuries, and the rest of the residents and firefighters were all safe and accounted for.

 

Fire and EMS crews remained on scene past 5:00 a.m. ensuring that smoke was removed from the structure and assisting residents back into their units.

 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
