West Columbia, SC 04/03/2021 - Creating new traditions during a difficult year, East Point Academy celebrated April’s Fools Day with a school-wide “Pandas Got Jokes” knock-knock joke contest. Golden door statues awaited the winners as students from each homeroom delivered their joke before a panel of jolly judges. The competition was safely enjoyed via live stream by students on campus as well as students and parents at home.
Laughter abounded as children 4K through 8th grade delivered their jokes. The judges had a tough job in naming the Pandas Got Jokes winners. In the 4K-2nd grade division, Ms. Flanagan’s representatives, James Fogle and Dahlia Hulette, stole hearts with their melodic joke: “Knock knock. Who’s there? Leon. Leon who? Leon me, when you’re not strong.”
Winning in the 3rd-5th division was Lucy Zug and Jeremiah Williams from Ms. Zhang’s class with their delightful delivery of “Knock, knock. Who’s there? Lena. Lena who? Lena little closer and I’ll tell you another joke.”
Taking the title for Middle Campus was Ms. Lu’s students Journee Preston and Beckett Riley with their celebratory joke: “Knock, knock. Who’s there? Abby. Abby who? Abby birthday to you!”
Finally, the overall winner of the Pandas Got Jokes competition was Mr. Barber’s homeroom. Mia Rodriguez and Channing Sanders delivered a content appropriate joke taking the crown! “Knock, knock. Who’s there. Denial. Denial who? Denial is in Egypt, but I'm right here.”
Reflecting on the event, Elementary Assistant Principal Ashley Cohoon remarked, “I enjoyed our first knock-knock joke contest because I was able to see each homeroom work together to choose a joke, encourage their homeroom representatives, and to tell the joke on stage. It can be intimidating speaking on a large stage, but our students did amazing!” Joke judge and school Financial Coordinator, Sherry Storey, echoed Cohoon’s enthusiasm saying “It was great to see the students perform the knock-knock jokes. The laughter was uplifting for all.”
