Lexington, SC 08/27/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A standoff with a man that was having a mental health crisis ended nearly 12 hours after it started Thursday. According to the Lexington Police Department, a tactical team from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department was able to take the subject into custody before midnight Thursday ending the situation. Police say the man was transported to a local medical facility for a mental health evaluation after he was in custody.
At about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, a man that was thought to be armed threatened to harm himself and barricaded inside a shed in the yard of a home off Roberts Street in the Town of Lexington. Officer quickly realized that the man could have been a danger to himself or others, so they asked neighbors to leave their homes and closed the street as they set up a perimeter to contain the situation.
The LPD’s Crisis Negotiation Team was notified, and its members were eventually able to contact the man via telephone. After a period of time, members of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department’s Crisis Team joined the effort to establish a rapport with the man.
After reasoning with the subject for approximately 12 hours failed to cause him to surrender, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department’s Tactical Operations Team was able to physically make contact with the man and safely take him into custody. Neither the Lexington Police Department nor the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department have reported that anyone was injured as a result of their operation.
A spokesman for the Lexington Police Department said via Twitter late Thursday night that they would try and release more information Friday regarding the entire operation.
