Lexington, SC 011/28/2023 (Paul Kirby) – Monday, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher released a statement updating the case of the unidentified male that was found in an abandoned room at the Motel 6 on Burning Tree Drive on August 14, 2023, shortly after 07:00 p.m. in Lexington County. The male had been deceased in the motel room for approximately two to three weeks before being discovered by a passerby searching for a friend. The motel had been closed permanently since March 1, 2023. It has since been demolished as a part of the Carolina Crossroads project and the reworking of the St. Andrews Road exit by the SCDOT.
The male found in the motel has been positively identified as Anthony Wayne McCullough, 49, of Columbia. Mr. McCullough was identified through DNA analysis after tips received from friends and a possible family member.
An autopsy was performed on August 16, 2023, and the final cause of death has been determined to be a multi-drug overdose. Both methamphetamines and fentanyl were found in McCullough’s system. The manner of death is ruled accidental.
Fisher said that she and her staff appreciate all of the tips and information received in this case. This led to the positive identification of Mr. McCullough.
