Lexington County Council elects new Chairman, Vice Chairwoman

Lexington, SC 01/15/2022 – The members of the Lexington County Council elected a new Chairman and Vice Chairwoman during their council meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 11. According to Lexington County's Spokesperson Jessica Imbimbo, the nine member council selected Scotty “Scott” R. Whetstone of Council District 1 as their Chairman and Beth A. Carrigg of Council District 7 as their Vice Chairwoman.

As the council member in the District 1 seat, Chairman Whetstone serves the Pelion, Gaston, Swansea and Sandy Run areas. His district also includes parts of Edmund and Fairview. Chairman Whetstone has been a member of Lexington County Council since 2016. He has previously served as Chairman in 2019 and 2020.

“I am honored to be able to serve again as Chairman with such a great group of leaders,” Whetstone said. “I am looking forward to helping lead this county into the next era.”

Chairman Whetstone has served on multiple committees during his time as a council member. Whetstone has also previously served as the council’s Parliamentarian and he is a past executive committee member for the Central South Carolina Alliance.

Whetstone is a proud father to his 13-year-old son, Tyler.

Vice Chairwoman Beth Carrigg serves Council District 7, which includes the Seven Oaks area, and parts of both Irmo and Lexington. Vice Chairwoman Carrigg has been a member of Lexington County Council since 2019. She currently serves as the chairwoman of the Justice and Economic Development Committees, and she is a member of the Planning Committee. Carrigg has also served as a previous Parliamentarian for the council. Prior to serving as a county councilmember, Carrigg served as the elected Clerk of Court for Lexington County from 2005 to 2016.

“I am honored and excited to be a part of such an amazing group of leaders working together to ensure responsible growth and quality services to the citizens of Lexington County,” Carrigg said about being elected as the newest vice chair.

Carrigg was born and raised in South Carolina and has been a resident of Lexington County for more than 35 years. She attended Midlands Technical College and the University of South Carolina. She is married to the Honorable John Carrigg, Esq. and they share three adult children and two grandchildren.
