Lexington County firefighters fighting multi-family apartment fire Wednesday afternoon

Lexington, SC 07/05/2023 (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County firefighters are on the scene of an apartment fire in the Pine Ridge area of Lexington County Wednesday afternoon. The fire was dispatched at approximately 3:52 p.m. at the Congaree Villa Apartments which is located in the 2400 block of Fish Hatchery Road near Fish Hatchery Court just off Charleston Highway.

When firefighters arrived, they began a size up of the building and the fire. That revealed they had an active fire in between the two floors of the apartment in a hidden area as well as the attic. As some of the crews were assigned to begin opening up those hidden structural spaces, they continued to locate more fire. As they looked deeper, it became evident that lightning from a storm that had just passed through the area struck the apartment setting the apartment on fire. Although the fire never seemed to build to any intensity, the amount of material that that the teams had to cut through and open to reveal all the fire did cause a significant loss to the building.

Dominion Energy did respond and disconnect the power to the building. It remains unclear how many people were displaced because of this fire. This is still an active incident and we will update the report if more information becomes available.
