Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) - Firefighters from across the southwest region of Lexington County responded to a commercial structure fire in the 900 block of Oak Street just off Pine in the town of Pelion early Sunday morning. The fire was in a small brick building that had most recently been used as a Hispanic specialty grocery. It sits adjacent to the old Pelion Rescue Squad building and at one-point many years ago, it had been a small coin laundry.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they had flames and smoke visible. As additional equipment and personnel arrived on the scene Pine Street (SC Hwy 302) was closed so that firefighters could establish a water supply from a nearby fire hydrant. This also helped firefighters gain access to the fire scene with additional pieces of fire equipment.
County law enforcement officers were on the scene and assisted with the streets closure. A crew from Lexington County EMS stood by in case somebody was injured during the fight.
Even though firefighters quickly brought the fire under control, the interior of the store was completely gutted. Approximately half the roof collapsed and one whole end of building has a gaping hole in it. It is being considered a total loss. Although the Pelion Rescue Squad building is in proximity to the building that burned, firefighters appeared to have spared that building any extensive damages by protecting it while the building of origin was burning.
No injuries have been reported by officials with Lexington County. They also have not publicly said what started the fire.
