Lexington, SC 03/15/2024 - Dwight Anthony Powell, 42, of Saluda, has been convicted in Lexington County General Sessions Court following a trial. A Lexington County jury convicted Powell of Burglary – Second Degree (violent) and Attempted Grand Larceny, value $10,000 or greater. Circuit Court Judge Walton J. McLeod IV sentenced Powell to eight (8) years in prison.
This case was prosecuted by Eleventh Circuit Deputy Solicitor Angela G. Martin and Assistant Solicitor Kyle Smith. The investigation was conducted by the Irmo Police Department.
On the morning of Tuesday, November 10, 2020, an Irmo attorney found that his garage and storage building, both located behind his business on Woodrow Street, had been burglarized. Many valuable items, including an antique bed, had been removed from the building during the nighttime and were outside against the side of the structure. A lock from the garage area of this building had also been removed. A convertible Maserati, valued at over fifteen thousand dollars, was stored in the structure.
During an investigation by the Irmo Police Department, Sgt. Kelly Mountzorous was able to lift latent fingerprints from the window of the car. After analysis by SLED, two individuals were identified as leaving those prints at the crime scene. One was the defendant, Dwight Powell, and the other was a cooperating co-defendant, who testified during the trial. The investigation determined that Powell and the co-defendant had gone to steal the Maserati, but were unable to get it started.
At the sentencing hearing, the State informed the Court that Powell had multiple prior criminal convictions. Powell will be immediately transferred to the S.C. Department of Corrections to begin service of the sentence.
