Lexington, SC 02/28/2022 (Paul Kirby) – Lexington School District One’s Chief Communications Officer Kathryn McPhail sent an email to the parents of the District's students shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday saying that effective immediately, masks would no longer be required on their school busses. She said that the change comes after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on February 25, 2022, that it will not require that people wear masks on buses or vans operated by public or private school systems.
This is one of the last mandates in place in the public schools of South Carolina. Just before the end of the school year last spring, Governor Henry McMaster issued several orders that drastically curtailed what could be mandated for school children based on federal guidance.
Since that time. Several surges of the virus spiked putting pressure on schools to meet their staffing requirements if they tried to follow the erratic mandates and masks guidance from the CDC. As the last of the variants eased, the government, through the CDC, has reluctantly given up their ability to keep school age children in mask while at school. Many say that this is the strongest indication yet that this has changed from a pandemic to an endemic, something we'll have to live with on occasion in a seasonable factor. They believe it will be treatable for all but the most susceptible like the flu, pneumonia, or a severe cold depending on the health of the person before they contract the illness.
