Lexington, SC 06/02/2025 – Shilah Lawson of Lexington High School was selected as the 2025 Doris Burkett Scholarship recipient. She was recognized at the Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center’s Business over Breakfast program in May.
Since 1995, the Chamber has administered the Doris Burkett Scholarship and has awarded more than $125,000. The late Doris Burkett served as the Executive Director of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce for 12 years and was a proud graduate of Gilbert High School. The scholarship is given to one Lexington School District One student who will be attending either a four-year college, university or technical college. Criteria include a minimum grade point average of at least a 4.0, and participation in community and other extracurricular activities.
“The recipient, Shilah Lawson, has shown great ambition to achieve excellence,” said Misty Stathos, Doris Burkett Scholarship Chairwoman. This is evidenced by her extensive involvement and achievements. Shilah has served as student body president her senior year and was selected as a delegate for Palmetto Girls State. Additionally, her involvement in the Lexington High School Improvement Council, the National Honor Society for the Sciences, and the National Honor Society for Dance Arts highlights her diverse talents and dedication.
As an example of her leadership skills, Shilah demonstrated remarkable compassion and initiative following the passing of a beloved teacher. During this understandably challenging time for the school and its students, she took the lead in organizing a meaningful memorial, The Legacy Tree Project, a lasting tribute to the departed teacher and other Lexington High School alumni.
Shilah plans to attend the University of South Carolina and major in middle level education with a minor in event management.
