Lexington, SC 10/14/2024 (Paul Kirby) – Officers with the Lexington Police Department responded to a traffic crash over the weekend and eventually arrested one of the drivers who was apparently under the influence. What makes this crash unique from many other DUI collisions was what she was under the influence of.
Officers say that when the woman appeared intoxicated, they searched her vehicle and found multiple canisters of intoxicating gasses. These types of gases, also known as “Whippets”, can cause a euphoric feeling when they are inhaled.
The most common type of gas used to get high is Nitrous Oxide which is also known as “Laughing Gas” when it is used in a dental of medical practice. It can be found easily as the propellent for items such as whip cream in a can or the small, silver, canisters used for paint, pellet, or BB guns. Larger canisters of it are now available commercially.
At some large parties, nightclubs, or music festivals where significant numbers of young people gather, these gases or often sold in balloons for ease of use. In the Lexington case, the woman had a great deal of the larger commercial containers she had apparently been using.
The woman was arrested and charged with DUI and the Unlawful Use/Possession of Aromatic Hydrocarbons. She was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center where she faced a judge for a bond hearing.
