Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) - Travis Price, a resident of the Lake Murray area of Lexington County has filed to run for Lexington County School District One’s Board of Trustees. Price and his family live west of the town of Lexington off US Highway 378 near Beachwood Middle School.
Price is married to Tina and the couple have two sons. One is 15 years old and is a freshman at Gilbert High School. The other is 12 and is a student at Gilbert Middle School.
According to Price, he felt led to do more in service to his community. He’s already involved in a number of outside activities yet; he still wants to do more to help improve his neighbors' lives. Price says considering this, he knew no better way to serve than to run for school board.
Price describes himself as a servant leader with a passion for mentoring and developing youth. He says that he and his family love the Lexington community and Lexington District One. He says that if he’s elected, he vows to advocate for all schools in the district. He also pledges he will advocate for all the teachers and students of Lexington District One. “Because I have a servant leader’s heart, I felt called to offer my assistance in this fashion,” Price said in a recent interview. “I think we have one of the best school districts in the state. However, these are challenging times and I feel like we needed strong leadership; leaders with common sense and level heads serving as we navigate these challenges.”
As stated earlier, Price is no stranger to leadership roles. He is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and has served on USC’s Youth Alumni Board. He is currently serving on USC’s Rich/Lex Alumni Board of Directors. Price founded and currently serves as the chairman of Safe Lexington. Its members promote more green space in the community and safer places to live and exercise.
According to Price, he enjoys athletics and has been a youth baseball coach for a number of years. He also brought the F3 group to the Lexington area. Now, he’s started a mentoring program in the community associated with F3’s goals. Currently, he has identified and developed approximately 100 men to mentor in area schools. According the website f3nation.com, F3 is a national network that includes 2,208 free, peer-led workouts for men. Their mission is to plant, grow, and serve small workout groups for men that invigorate male community leadership.
According to Price, he feels the current school board does a great job of leading the district. Now, he wants to lend his support as the board works to maintain the district at its current level and then move to improve it as it accelerates and excels into the future.
There are currently four seats up for grabs in the November 3rd general election. Three of the current incumbents are running for re-election. Cindy Smith, the current board chairperson, has said she will not run and is retiring. She did not file by the designated deadline.
Winning a seat on the school board is a numbers game. It does not require 50% plus one vote to win. In this school board race, the candidates who receive the four highest vote counts in the election will take the four board seats.
