Springdale, SC 06/08/2022 (Paul Kirby) – Tuesday afternoon, Shamard Atkins, 36, used a stolen car he was driving to try and run over a Springdale police officer who had pulled him over. According to the department, this occurred at approximately 4:31 p.m.
The Springdale officer had stopped Atkins after learning that the vehicle he was driving had been reported stolen. Atkins waited until the officer exited his patrol vehicle then drove at the officer. Atkins did strike the officer causing him to be thrown into his patrol vehicle. He then fell to the ground. Fortunately, the officer sustained only minor injuries. Atkins then struck the patrol vehicle causing significant damage before fleeing the scene.
Officers from the neighboring City of Cayce Police Department captured Atkins after a short vehicle pursuit. Atkins was transported to Lexington County Detention Center where he was booked on a number of charges from both jurisdictions.
The charges included:
Attempted Murder
Malicious Injury to Property between $2,000 and $10,000
Possession of a Stolen Vehicle over $2,000
Failure to Stop for Blue Lights 2nd Offense and Subsequent
Driving Under Suspension 3rd Offense and Subsequent
Habitual Offender
Reckless Driving
As of Wednesday afternoon, the LCDC’s website showed no bond had been set for Atkins.
