Miss Aquila Pageant held at Airport High School recently

West Columbia, SC 03/29/2022 (Paul Kirby) – Last month, 25 contestants gathered to compete in Airport High School’s 2022 Miss Aquila Pageant. The pageant is a popular, annual fundraiser event for the school’s yearbook.


The contestants competed in three major categories and a number of sub-categories. First, there were one on one interviews with a panel of four judges on the morning of the pageant. Later, the contestants competed in theme wear. This allowed them to show their individually and passion through an outfit they helped create. Finally, the day drew to a close with an Evening Gown Category, based on beauty, poise, grace and stage presence.


Along with the Beauty Category winner, there were many other sub-categories that came with titles the contestants were vying for. This is a list of all categories and their winners are listed below:


Directors’ Choice: Jasmine Booth & Carmen Collins


Miss Photogenic: Abby Sutor


Miss Congeniality: Ally Phillips


Overall Theme Wear: Nina Shealy


Miss Freshmen: Maggie Wright - 1st Runner Up: Savannah Sturgess


Miss Sophomore: Ally Phillips - 1st Runner Up: Aubrey Waters


Miss Junior: Sydney Evans - 1st Runner Up: Harley McIver


Miss Senior: Gracie Spires - 1st Runner Up: Peyton Jones


Miss Aquila: Nina Shealy


The winner of the Peoples’ Choice Award was based on the most amount of money collected in a jar that was provided each contestant before and during the pageant. That money will be used to defray the cost of the 2021-2022 yearbook. The People’s Choice winner was chosen all of the contestant that were competing in the pageant. These winners were awarded a crown, sash and flowers.


Miss Congeniality was voted on by all the contestants. They were told to select who they thought was the most helpful, kindest, and well-liked before and during the pageant. This winner was also awarded a trophy, along with her title.


Photos were taken of each contestant and judged for the title of Miss Photogenic. That winner was also awarded a trophy, along with her title.


The highest scored Theme Wear Category was judged based on style, fit, stage presence and articulation in presenting the selected passion. The winner was awarded a trophy for this award.


The Director’s Choice Award is an esteemed award chosen by the pageant director for the contestant(s) that is judged to be deserving of extra recognition. These winners must be well-rounded contestant in all areas of beauty, grace, kindness and sportsmanship. There were two winners this year and they were also awarded a trophy, along with their title.


Each of the class winners were selected from their grade level. Only seniors were eligible to win the title of Miss Aquila. Each grade level winner won a crown, sash, trophy and flowers. There was one runner up in each grade level category. They were each awarded a bouquet of flowers and trophy too.
