Mobile home destroyed by fire just east of Gaston Saturday night

Gaston, SC -7/18/2021 (Paul Kirby) – A mobile home caught fire and burned around the 700 blk of Mack Street in Gaston Saturday night. The fire, which was reported sometime around 8:00 p.m., was close to the intersection of Mack Street and Eastwood Court between Hwy. 321 south and the American Legion Building.

Firefighters and trucks from across southern Lexington County responded to the fire. When the first resources arrived, they found that a good portion of the mobile home was already engulfed in flames. First due fire trucks pulled their attack hoses and went into a defensive operation until additional personnel and trucks filled with more water could arrive to assist. At that point, the teams were able to more aggressively fight back the flames in an offensive mode.

An ambulance from Lexington County’s EMS responded to assist the firefighters in the event that someone was injured. Deputies from the sheriff’s department were also on the scene assisting as they could.

According to another resident of the area, he heard what he described as multiple gunshots around 8:00 p.m. He said that it is not unusual to hear shooting in that rural area of the county, but when he began hearing other unidentified noises, it prompted him to go outside to see what was going on. When he did, he heard more loud popping and crackling noises and he could see the glow of the flames without leaving his yard. At that point, he began seeing the fire equipment arrive.

It took over an hour to bring the fire fully under control. Lexington County has released few details regarding how the fire started or if anyone was injured as a result of the destruction. The home is being considered a total loss.
