Mac Edisto, SC (Paul Kirby) - A mobile home caught fire on Tindall Road near the intersection of Thor Road Friday afternoon. This is located between the town of Pelion and the Mac Edisto community in proximity to the north branch of the Edisto River and the Aiken County line. It is largely a farming community and both large and small farming operations exist. There are many single family and manufactured homes in the area that provide their owners with both privacy and plenty of room. The amount of livestock that inhabits the community closely rivals or exceeds the number of humans who call the area home.
The call regarding the fire came in shortly after 1:30 p.m. Friday. Because this is such a rural portion of Lexington County, additional equipment needed to carry water to fires was dispatched. When the first firefighters arrived on scene, they reported that flames and smoke we're coming out of a large portion of a mobile home. They first attacked the fire from the outside to push back the flames but quickly transitioned into an offensive, interior fire attack mode.
As additional equipment began to arrive, the operators of those trucks pumped their water to the fire engine whose team and equipment were already committed to battling the flames. Even though this area is so rural, Lexington County and its leaders have provided fire stations, equipment, and manpower to that region over the years and resources from those stations continued to converge on the scene with both trucks and additional manpower. The firefighters came together as a single team and they were able to quickly put the fire out.
Lexington County reported that no injuries were associated with this fire even though the home is being considered a total loss. The American Red Cross was notified and is assisting a family of six that was displaced as a result of the blaze.
