Mobile home heavily damaged by fire near Pelion Thursday afternoon

Pelion, SC (05/27/2021 Paul Kirby) – A mobile home was heavily damaged by fire in the 600 blk. of Bushberry Road near Pelion Thursday afternoon. The fire was reported around 2:40 p.m. to Lexington County’s Central Communications Center by several citizens who dialed 911.

Callers reported seeing flames and a large amount of thick, black smoke rising from the area behind their homes when they made the initial calls. At first it was thought this was simply a woods or brush fire but a unit from Lexington County’s Fire Service quickly arrived on the scene and reported that the home and the woods were both on fire. The first chief officer on scene reported that he encountered a single-wide mobile home that was approximately 25% involved with about 1.5 acres of brush or wildlands burning around it.

More county firefighters arrived and quickly began attacking the fire. Additional water trucks were requested along with a truck especially equipped to help rehab the firefighters battling the blaze in the afternoon heat. It took several hours to bring the fire completely under control.

To add to the excitement and noise associated with the fire, a U.S. military helicopter gunship in CAE’s flight pattern saw the fire while from above and circled back to ensure firefighters were on scene. The large warbird circled a number of times getting a bird’s eye view of the scene before it finally continued its journey.

Lexington County has not said what started the fire. They also haven’t said if anyone was injured or how much monetary loss there was as a result of the fire. The home was made uninhabitable by the blaze.
