Lexington, SC – 03/09/2021 (Paul Kirby) – The Richland County Sheriff's Department and a number of other law enforcement agencies were assisted by Lexington police officers in a search for a carjacking suspect yesterday. This search began in an area close to Augusta Road and I-20 Monday afternoon between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. Police said they believe a young man stole a car which he later fled from on foot. At one point, it was believed he might have been armed during all this.
According to police, the young man was joined by three others as he led law enforcement officers on a pursuit from Richland County. This all ended during the afternoon commute in an area of Lexington near where I-20 and Augusta Road meet.. That's when the Lexington police officers began assisting.
A Command Post was established at a local business and officers began coordinating the search for the suspect. The Richland County deputies were joined by deputies from Lexington County, the Lexington Police Department, and troopers from the SC Highway Patrol.
K-9 teams were brought in and a perimeter was set. As more officers flooded the area, the young man, described as being about 5’ 8” tall who was last seen wearing a black and white hoodie, continued to elude them. Eventually, just before 9:00 p.m., the search was called off and police officers took to social media to ask people to make sure to lock their homes Monday night. They also asked citizens to call 911 if anyone spotted the suspect or a suspicious person.
Police will continue to try and locate the suspect through investigative means.
