New Don Pepe’s Mexican Grill and Cantina slated to open in December of 2024

Pelion, SC 07/08/2024 (Paul Kirby) – The popular restaurant and cantina Don Pepe’s hopes to be completed with construction on their brand-new building on Edmund Highway near Pelion by the end of the year. According to Harold Rodriguez, the owner of the restaurant, the new location will be a short distance from the old one at 7645 Edmund Highway, Pelion, SC.

Don Pepe’s opened about a dozen years ago in a building that used to be broken in two. The left side that now houses the bar was a liquor store and the right was a small bar and grill. As Rodriguez has steered Don Pepe’s to success since it opened, the old building began to show its age. There are places where the old concrete was originally poured unlevel, there aren’t enough handicapped parking spots, and the parking lot is rough slag and not asphalt or concrete. There is also a lack of space for special occasions and private parties. Having special celebrations for something like Cinco de Mio requires the use of temporary tents set up off the main parking area outside. There is also little access to the rear of the building for deliveries and employee parking.

The new location is designed to be approximately 6,000 square feet and will be greatly improved as it was designed and built from the ground up to be a restaurant. It will have an attached patio, a full-sized bar, and a private space that can be for special occasions. Rodriguez has also promised additional handicapped parking that’s more clearly marked and an improved parking lot surface.

Lyn-Rich Construction is doing the construction and First Community Credit Union is providing the financing. Rodriguez says that if all goes well, the building and business will be open in December of this year.

Rodriguez took a moment to thank the citizens of Pelion and Southern Lexington County. “I can’t say enough about our customers and this community. They started coming to eat with us when we would have less than a dozen cars in the parking lot. Now, they come in regularly to just eat or to celebrate birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, and other important dates on their annual calendar. Hopefully this new building is just a start to a much brighter future!”
