Lexington, SC 06/14/2022 (Paul Kirby) -Lexington will soon have another option to the standard public school’s system that will be available to students across the area. New Light Academy, based in Lexington, is an in-person mentoring program that partners with an accredited online charter school, the South Carolina Preparatory Academy. South Carolina Preparatory Academy is a tuition free, online based charter school out of Anderson, SC.
Students who choose to enroll in New Light Academy’s curriculum work on their online schoolwork, either through live classes or homework, while Christian mentors check in and support students all throughout their academic day. Those students will use the online resources called Grammarly (Writing), LitChart (English Literature), Bartleby (various), and Brilliant (math and science). These programs are intended to assist students who need academic, scaffolding, modeling, or knowledge gaps filled in.
Each day at New Life is started with a Bible based devotion, prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. Students succeed in the academic work in classroom setting with class procedures, agendas for different grade levels, reward and consequences system, and schedules for various programs in New Light Academy. Students' academic day which ends at roughly 12:00 p.m. Then parents have the option to pick up their children or let them stay to participate in the two/three-hour civic leadership sessions. These extended day sessions allow students to learn how to master the US Constitution with David Barton and Rick Green's Wallbuilders and Patriot Academy, the moral imagination with Answers in Genesis ministry, and cultural reasoning skills through the Thomas Sowell curriculum. The civic leadership program keeps all activities homework free and full of group activities that have a particular virtue at the center.
New Light Academy is free to parents, requires no statement of faith, trains dedicated mentors with a classical approach to pedagogy, and recovers and returns power and support to parents.
