One dead after motorcycle crash that happened in the Town of Gilbert Friday night

Gilbert, SC 04/29/2024 (Paul Kirby) – A person died Sunday afternoon from injuries they sustained in a motorcycle versus SUV collision that occurred Friday night at about 8:30 p.m. According to Master Trooper Mitchel Ridgeway of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, this collision happened at Juniper Springs Road near its intersection with Wire Road inside the Town of Gilbert.

According to Master Trooper Ridgeway, the rider of the motorcycle was travelling south on Juniper Springs Road when he stopped in the roadway and was sitting still. Ridgeway did not indicate why the motorcycle’s rider had stopped and whether he was turning or had some other reason for doing that. The SUV was also travelling south when it struck the stopped motorcycle in the rear throwing the rider onto the asphalt street.

Crews from the Lexington County Fire Service, EMS, and law enforcement responded to begin treatment of the fallen biker. He was put in an ambulance and taken to a landing zone at Longs Pond Road and I-20. Here he was transferred to a medical helicopter. That helicopter flew the rider to the Level 1 Trauma Center at Prisma Health’s Palmetto Richland’s campus in north Columbia. The rider lived until approximately 1:30 p.m. on Sunday when he succumbed to his injuries and died.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has not yet identified the rider by name.
