One dead following collision with Lexington County fire truck near Swansea

Swansea, SC 12/02/2021 (Paul Kirby) – One man is dead after the vehicle he was in collided with a Lexington County fire engine southeast of the Town of Swansea, SC. According to a spokeswoman for the county, the collision occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. Wednesday evening. It was at the intersection of St. Matthews Road and Pine Tower Circle.

Lexington County Fire Service’s Engine 316 out of the Swansea Fire Station was returning from a fire on Culler Road when the collision occurred. It was driving non-emergent when a passenger vehicle with one occupant crossed the center line and struck the fire truck head on. That occupant, identified by Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher as 71-year-old Christopher Lykes Sr. of Swansea, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The two firefighters were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.


The SC Highway Patrol is in charge of investigating this collision.
