Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) 11/16/2020 - One person is dead following a house fire near Gilbert. According to Lexington County's public information officer Harrison Cahill, the fire was reported about 6:49 p.m. Monday night.
Cahill said multiple county fire stations were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of Chickasaw Trail as soon as reports of the fire were received. Chickasaw Trail is located off Augusta Highway close to the Priceville Road intersection.
Cahill said when firefighters arrived, they found a home with smoke coming out of it. Crews quickly pulled hoses from their trucks and began to attack the fire. Other crews who had been tasked with searching the home found a person inside. That individual was removed from the burning home by firefighters but was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Units from Lexington County EMS were also on the scene. County firefighters were backed up by trucks and crews from the Batesburg-Leesville Fire Department. Personnel from the Lexington County Sheriff's Department were assisting and deputy coroners from Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher's office were on scene beginning their portion of the death investigation.
Just before 8:30 p.m., firefighters requested an ambulance for another man who was thought to be suffering from smoke inhalation. That person was conscious and alert and firefighters were caring for him until EMS personnel took over.
Cahill said that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) would oversee the fire investigation. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher will be in charge of cause and manner of death investigation and releasing the identity of the deceased once their family has been properly notified.
